CLUB HISTORY

In 1985, legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus arrived in Atlanta with a vision: to craft something extraordinary for his first course in the region. What he discovered was a hidden gem — a picturesque, gated community known as The Country Club of the South. Teaming up with development visionary Bob Sierra, Mr. Nicklaus began work on what would become one of his signature designs. By 1987, the first nine holes were ready — and a new era of championship golf had begun.

On opening day, Jack Nicklaus joined the club’s first Head Golf Professional, Doug Grove, for a ceremonial round. From the moment they walked down the first fairway, it was clear this course was something special. Just six months later, Mr. Nicklaus returned to complete his inaugural round on the back nine, calling the course one of his finest achievements. To commemorate the occasion, he gifted every charter Member a replica of the wooden driver he used to win his final Masters — a treasured piece of golf history.

The Country Club of the South quickly gained a reputation as a must-play destination, attracting golfers from across the region. In 1991, the Champions Tour selected the club as a host venue for its annual tournament, sponsored by Nationwide Insurance. For three unforgettable years, legends like Gary Player, Lee Trevino, and Bob Murphy competed on our fairways. The second hole became infamous among senior pros — deemed the toughest on the tour — as evidenced by both Player and Trevino carding sevens during practice rounds.

To maintain its elite status, the club invested more than $5 million into an ambitious renovation of the fairways, tees, and practice facilities. As part of the transformation, The Country Club of the South partnered with Mizuno Corporation to create one of the region’s most advanced golf training centers — blending tradition with cutting-edge performance.

Today, The Country Club of the South is home to nearly 400 passionate Members and a team of five world-class teaching professionals. With a championship-caliber course, premier facilities, and a legacy rooted in excellence, it remains one of Atlanta’s most distinguished private clubs — where history meets the future of the game.
